Recently the world witnessed the senseless murder of George Floyd by men who were charged to protect and serve him. We recognize the resulting pain, angst, and fear among members of our Black community and others who want to live with peace, dignity and social justice. In addition to grieving for Mr. Floyd, we grieve the many other lives lost due to racial injustice and violence in this country and around the world.
Those of us working in higher education have an overwhelming duty and responsibility to model the highest standards of humanity. That means calling out acts of racism, aversion and injustice. As an organization, we have long served as a safe space for the exuberant exchange of awareness and perspectives; however, we strongly rebuke those who wish to fuel the fires of discord and hatred. Voices and contributions that advance the quest for equity and equal justice are essential to helping achieve meaningful progress in ensuring that all students, faculty, staff and administrators are fully engaged and have what they need to succeed.
WHET believes in the transformative power of education and is committed to breaking down barriers and biases — conscious and unconscious — that hinder the progress of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
